What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly requested procedures, and it ranks especially high in patient satisfaction because it enhances your figure while boosting self-confidence. Dr. Greco has extensive experience performing breast augmentation.

The goal of breast augmentation surgery is to enhance the volume and shape of the breasts. During thorough consultations, Dr. Greco explains each step of the surgery and each choice you have, so you can make informed, confident decisions.

Your Implant Options

Dr. Greco offers saline and silicone implants, as well as Motiva implants – next-generation silicone implants with a cohesive “gummy bear” gel and a smooth, biocompatible shell designed to mimic natural breast tissue.

Implants come in various sizes and shapes, such as the natural (“teardrop”) shape or the rounded shape. Dr. Greco helps you select the most appropriate implant for your goals.

Implants can be placed completely under the chest muscle, completely above the chest muscle, or partially under the muscle. Dr. Greco explains each choice so you can make informed, confident decisions.

The implants are inserted through small incisions under the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit.

Many women combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to add volume and lift:

Am I a Good Candidate?

Some of the more common candidates for breast implants are women with naturally small breasts who desire a more curvaceous appearance. Breast augmentation is also appropriate for women who have lost some of their breast volume due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Mothers often combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to add volume and also lift “deflated” breast tissue.

Another group of candidates are women who have lost a large amount of weight. Weight loss is often most pronounced in the breast area, causing the breasts to shrink one or more cup sizes. Once the weight loss has been achieved, the lost volume can be restored with breast augmentation surgery.

While women pursue breast augmentation for a variety of reasons, all candidates should be thoroughly prepared and have realistic expectations. Dr. Greco shows prospective patients a wealth of before-and-after photos to help them understand what their results might look like. This approach also helps reduce anxiety, and it consistently leads to highly rewarding outcomes.

The Breast Augmentation Process

Consultation

Before the procedure, Dr. Greco conducts thorough consultations, explaining each step of the surgery and helping you select the most appropriate implant type, size, shape and placement.

The Procedure

Dr. Greco performs all breast augmentation procedures at a fully accredited surgical facility to promote patient safety. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with sedation, and usually takes about one to two hours.

The implants are inserted through small incisions under the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit. Once they are in position, the incisions are closed and the chest is wrapped in special surgical bandages.

Recovery

Patients go home within hours of their treatment. Immediately after surgery, most patients feel chest tightness, as if they had just completed a vigorous upper-body workout. Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.

Within one week, most of the swelling subsides and any stitches and drains are removed, and the vast majority of patients return to work. Some residual swelling continues for a few months, and final results are typically achieved within two to three months.
