What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (mastopexy) lifts breasts that appear saggy or “deflated.” For the best possible results, many women combine a breast lift with breast augmentation for a bustline that is both fuller and perkier.

Dr. Greco offers a full array of breast procedures and is experienced in various breast lift techniques. He will develop a unique treatment plan for you, taking into account your individual anatomy, aesthetic concerns and desires.

A breast lift is often combined with augmentation or reduction:

Am I a Good Candidate?

A breast lift might be appropriate for you if your breasts appear saggy and this makes you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. There are many reasons why breasts might look “droopy,” including pregnancy, extreme weight loss and aging.

In addition, very large breasts might place pressure on the delicate skin and muscle tissues of the chest, causing the breasts to appear deflated and the nipples to point downward. In this case, a breast lift can be combined with breast reduction to achieve a proportionate, youthful appearance.

The Breast Lift Process

The Procedure

Dr. Greco typically performs breast lift surgery under general anesthesia. Surgery takes about two to four hours, depending on the technique used and the amount of reshaping needed.

If a relatively minor intervention is needed, he typically creates an incision around the nipple. If more extensive reshaping is needed, another incision might be created across the breast (the “keyhole” incision). Working through these incisions, Dr. Greco removes excess breast tissue and fat, repositions the nipple if needed, tightens the breast skin and gently closes the incisions.

Going Home

Most breast lift procedures are performed as outpatient surgeries, and patients go home the same day. Someone else needs to drive you because of the lingering effects of anesthesia. The chest is wrapped in special bandages, and sometimes surgical drainage tubes are placed; stitches and drainage tubes are removed within one week.

Recovery & Results

After a breast lift, most women notice that their breasts appear perkier and their nipples point upward. Any discomfort can usually be managed with prescription medication. Swelling and bruising typically subside within one week, when most patients can resume work; full recovery usually requires about two months.

A breast lift leaves light but permanent scars. The incision lines fade over time, eventually become only slightly noticeable, and can be easily hidden by a bra or bikini.
